Chapter Five

When Natalie finally managed to pull herself together and re-emerged from the bathroom ready to talk about what had just happened, she heard voices from the other room. It seemed a discussion would have to wait. The shoeboxes revealed a variety of designer shoes to match the dress. Natalie quickly chose a pair of black pumps with daring red soles. A quick shuffle proved they fit nicely and that she could handle the added height without too much trouble. She took one last look at her hair and face and straightened her shoulders.

She entered the room with a small smile, unsure of what she was about to encounter. “I knew I heard voices.”

“Natalie.” Sebastian reached a hand out to her and snared hers when she was within reach. “The Buchanans came to walk together to dinner.”

“Sounds good.”

The couple had cleaned up impressively and their attire left little to the imagination about their worth. Stan’s suit was well tailored and his cufflinks gleamed. Natalie was sure she’d seen Michelle’s dress in various colors in more than one of the magazines she’d read on the plane. Then there were the enviable gems glittering at Michelle’s ears, neck, wrists and fingers.

Stan smiled. “I hear it’s unforgettable architecturally, thanks to the work your man put into the design of it. Since we didn’t get a chance to check it out today, I thought we’d dine onsite and have a wander through.”

“Great.”

As they meandered down the hill along the romantically lit paths, Michelle and Natalie chatted while Sebastian interjected little facts about the resort whenever they encountered anything of note. Every turn seemed to be a cue for another fascinating titbit or anecdote about the construction. Under lamplight, the resort took on an ethereal feel that partnered well with the mood Natalie was in. Everything about the day had been dreamlike, why not something as simple as a walk as well?

The heat had all but dissipated, and Natalie was thankful for it after the blistering day. The breeze wafted over Sebastian before whispering over her, carrying his delicious scent mingled with his cologne. The goosebumps that prickled her skin had little to do with the chill in the air and more to do with the awareness of Sebastian that had her body on alert. Sebastian must have seen her from the corner of his eye when she absently rubbed her forearms. Before she could protest, he circled around to drape his jacket over her shoulders.

A move that caused Michelle to coo with delight. “You two make my teeth ache with how sweet you are.”

“Only taking care of her like she deserves.” Sebastian winked at her impishly, triggering the rising heat in Natalie’s cheeks.

He kept his arm around her until they reached the door of what was apparently the most exclusive of the three restaurants on the resort. One step inside and she could see why. Like everything she’d seen since arriving, the restaurant was gorgeous. The designers had managed to make it look modern
